Useful for scholarly criticism of dramatic works, this bibliography lists citations to books, book chapters, articles, and dissertations. It offers in-depth coverage of literary analysis of plays, but performance reviews and information about stagecraft and acting technique are not typically included. Available in print and electronic formats.
  • Ethnologuehttp://www.ethnologue.com A database of information on world languages, including information about geographic distribution, dialects, numbers of speakers, and linguistic affiliation. The site includes a bibliography. Maintained by SIL International, an organization that promotes language study for international faith-based work, this database is particularly strong for basic information about lesser-known and endangered languages.

Of particular interest is the languages section, in which links are categorized by language, dictionaries, lessons, and so on. The site is searchable.
  • Linguistics Resources on the Internethttp://www.sil.org/linguistics/topical.html A directory of reputable Internet sources for linguistics maintained by SIL International. The site provides links for every aspect of linguistics, including grammar and syntax, second-language teaching, language rights, and individual languages.
  • Encyclopedia of Contemporary French Culture. Ed. Alex Hughes and Keith Reader. London: Routledge, 1998. Short articles on a wealth of topics on French and Francophone culture from 1945 to the present. Related volumes cover contemporary German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and other cultures.
  • Encyclopedia of German Literature. Ed. Matthias Konzett. 2 vols. Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn, 2000. Covers authors and topics such as literary movements.
  • Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture. Ed. Barbara A. Tenenbaum and Georgette M. Dorn. 5 vols. New York: Scribner, 1996. Covers a wide variety of topics in over 5,000 articles that together constitute an overview of current knowledge about Latin America. Entries are organized by country and by topic (such as slavery, art, Asians in Latin America); biographical entries are included.
  • Guide to French Literature. Ed. Anthony Levi. 2 vols. Chicago: St. James, 1992. Includes biographical information as well as entries on movements and themes, covering Francophone Africa, the Caribbean, and France.

An invaluable source for understanding the various meanings of words and their changing definitions.
