• Sociological Abstracts. San Diego: Sociological Abstracts, 1952–. The most detailed index for the field, covering approximately 2,000 journals from 55 countries as well as books and book chapters. All entries from 1974 on include abstracts. The index is available in print and online.

• SocioSitehttp://www2.fmg.uva.nl/sociosite A host of links arranged in 18 categories and, within those categories, by country. Of particular note are the sections on sociologists, subjects in sociology, and data archives. The site is maintained by Albert Benschop of the University of Amsterdam.
• Urban Institutehttp://www.urban.org The Web site of a nonpartisan organization devoted to research on economic and social policy. Includes a wealth of reports by topic as well as analysis of issues.
• WWW Virtual Library: Demography and Population Studieshttp://demography.anu.edu.au/VirtualLibrary Lists more than 150 worldwide online population resources, including institutes, government resources, and organizations. The site is maintained by Diana Crow at the Australian National University.

• Encyclopedia of Sociology. Ed. Edgar G. Montgomery et al. 2nd ed. 5 vols. New York: Macmillan Library Reference, 2000. Provides scholarly discussions of such topics as class and race, ethnicity, economic sociology, and social structure. The articles are written by specialists and include excellent bibliographies.
• Violence in America: An Encyclopedia. Ed. Ronald Gottsman and Richard Maxwell Brown. 3 vols. New York: Scribner, 1999. A wide-ranging exploration of political, social, and psychological aspects of violence, including violence in sports and popular culture as well as violence against the environment, economic aspects of violence, and violence against specific populations. Experts from many disciplines contributed over 600 essays; the third volume includes an index to the set.
